Description
Fireworks over Oxford is an original acrylic painting by Amy Letts. Inspired by an obscure painting by William Turner called ‘The Salute’ and a workshop for StART Art Classes. During this workshop Amy Letts taught how to paint fireworks using the edge of a Credit Card and upon finishing decided to paint Fireworks over Oxford.
In adition to the Credit Card technique, Amy Letts also utilises Brushio (dropping powdered pigment onto the surface) to create the exploding fireworks. Observing how fireworks light up buildings, if only for a breif moment, Oxfords archetectural gems are painted quite vibrantly.
The buildings, trees and blue-green rooftops are created with a limited palette of cyan and yellow ocre. The yellow ocre perfectly captures the colour of Oxford’s limestone buildings. There’s smoke in the air and the sky shifts colour gradually from cyan to violet, and finally to black. With a smidgen of artistic liscence all the windows of the Radcliffe Camera appear lit up. (In reality it actually has a number of faux windows carved into the stone).
With Fireworks over Oxford the artist, Amy Letts, has achieved an exciting, atmospheric masterpiece.
