A master study of Alnwick Castle, based on the painting by J.M.W. Turner. Turner’s original is far more detailed, but Amy Letts wanted to emulate his later style which became significantly abstract. This evolution of style can be seen by comparing Turner’s painting of Oxford High street in 1810 with the 1837-9 version. Although the later is just a study, the style change can be observed in all Turner’s work circa 1840. Everything becomes a great deal more misty and indistinct.

Letts admires Turner for his experimentation with, and championing of, watercolours. It is her belief that, had he painted Alnwick Castle again, it would look somewhat like this.
