Description
Celtic Cross is an acrylic painting by artist Amy Letts depicting Saint Piran’s Cross, Perranzabuloe, Cornwall. It is believed to be the oldest Celtic Cross (so named because of their wheel-headed shape), dated as sometime pre 960 A.D. because it was mentioned as a landmark in the Charter of Kind Edgar. Located in the Sand Dunes between Perranporth and Newquay, it is nearby the ruins of Saint Piran’s Oratory, lost to the sand dunes for over a thousand years.
At 8-feet tall, inscribed stones such as this one are believed to be waymarkers. This one could be a marker for the coastal path, or St Piran’s Oratory, which would make it even older, actually predating the arrival of the Celts!
The painting depicts the ancient stone cross in its lonely isolation among the sand dunes. Interestingly, only three of the four holes are completely bored through. Is there some kind of significance to this?
